Ikigai is said to be a Japanese concept for which there is no actual translation in other languages. But the Venn diagram most seen on the Internet concerning this concept seems to be just a Western misinterpretation of it, which finds its origins in the work of Andres Zuzunaga, a Spanish author who created it in 2011. It appeared in the book What Would You Do If You Weren't Afraid? by Borja Vilaseca in 2012.
For the Japanese Ikigai is not about making money, although it can be a byproduct. It is not about what the world needs from you, but more about connecting with those who are important in your life. To the Japanese it is also not specifically about what you are good at. It is more about growth than about mastery. And lastly it is not always about what you love, but more about finding meaning and purpose in your daily life.
